Design and technology at Dunalley enables our pupils to combine practical skills with being creative and imaginative. Through our planned curriculum, we enable our pupils to create a range of structures, products using - mechanisms, textiles and electrical systems and food products all with a real-life purpose. Pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts that support other curriculum areas. The teaching of Design and Technology, across the school, follows the National Curriculum. It is carefully planned to ensure progression across the year groups alongside the opportunity to build on prior knowledge and skills. Children design products with a purpose in mind and an intended user of the products. We actively encourage the children to reuse and recycle materials to make new products as part of developing their awareness of environmental issues.
Cooking and nutrition is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare various healthy savoury products. We actively encourage the children to participate in the growing process in our school garden so they begin to understand seasonality and where food comes from.
The National Curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge, skills and understanding around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating units of work and lessons. Our staff have spent considerable time developing their long-term curriculum maps for their year groups to ensure that the full requirements of the National Curriculum are met.
These subject specific documents outline the content of the curriculum for each year group, across the academic year and provide an excellent insight into what each year group will be teaching.
