As a school, we believe that through our music curriculum we provide a vibrant musical experience for all children. We aim to provide opportunities for children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop musical skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms (in and out of class), and to have opinions about music that they like. Through our music curriculum pupils will:
- Gain enjoyment, self-confidence and a sense of achievement through musical activities.
- Be aware of, understand and respond appropriately to the rich variety of sounds in their environment and particularly to those organised arrangements of sounds called music.
- Acquire musical skills and understanding of musical concepts through primarily active listening then performing and composing.
- Develop their capacity to express ideas and feelings through the medium of sound.
We currently use the Charanga scheme of learning for our music teaching throughout school. This is a programme of learning that builds pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding in music. All children have the opportunity to participate in singing, listening to music from a variety of different times and cultures as well as learning to improvise and develop their own compositions.
At Dunalley, we also offer a range of additional opportunities for children, all can join our Key Stage 1 and 2 choirs who regularly perform in a variety of events in the local community as well as specialist instrumental tuition from peripatetic teachers.
These subject specific documents outline the content of the curriculum for each year group, across the academic year and provide an excellent insight into what each year group will be teaching.
