Our aim at Dunalley through our science teaching is to ensure that our pupils are taught the essential knowledge, scientific enquiry and vocabulary to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world around them. Our science curriculum is structured and planned using the PLAN resources produced by ASE. It provides the foundations for understanding the world through biology, chemistry and physics through carefully planned progression from EYFS through to Y6. This progression allows children to revisit and build upon previous learning in all areas of the science curriculum. Science is taught discreetly according to the curriculum plan but teachers make meaningful links with other subjects as appropriate for example design and technology. Learning and teaching in science is interactive and practical allowing opportunities for pupils to work independently, in pairs and also in groups of various sizes both inside and outside of the classroom, taking advantage of the environment we have at Dunalley through using, for example, the Forest School area or the pond.
The National Curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge, skills and understanding around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating units of work and lessons. Our staff have spent considerable time developing their long-term curriculum maps for their year groups to ensure that the full requirements of the National Curriculum are met.
These subject specific documents outline the content of the curriculum for each year group, across the academic year and provide an excellent insight into what each year group will be teaching.
